Short films are like poems, while features are like novels. If that's true, then the short film is the place to try new things and experiment a little. We can expect to see new twists or new takes on established tropes. What writer/director Michael Sharpe does with this short is to push what you expect to see and see how far he can take it. He doesn't reinvent the wheel here, but what Sharpe succeeds is with just how much he can show you without wasting a dime. Some shorts are flashy just to be flashy. OUT OF ONE'S MISERY is more than just a good short, it should be the text book example to show film students what to include on their reels. Sharpe shows control and real talent with his cast to get just the right emotion across in such a limited time. This should get the man some jobs, and it should also show others how it's done. Someone hire this man and let's see what he can do with a longer project. OUT OF ONE'S MIND proves that 2011's DEVILING wasn't a fluke. If this is playing a fest near you, check it out.
