The program started with the name "Kodin rahat" in October 1999 and was part of the Sunday morning slot "Huomenta Suomi" (Good Morning Finland) on MTV3 channel. It shared the same studio facilities with "Huomenta Suomi" and the same studio personnel from MTV3. When Kauppalehti, the leading Finnish financial newspaper, began to offer a supplement called "Saldo" it sought more cross-promotion on television and the title of the series eventually changed to "Saldo - Kodin rahat" in October 2000.

Background research and financial data processing for the series was provided by "Suomen Rahatieto SRT Oy" and later also "Kauppalehti Online" and "Kauppalehti Tähtirahastot".

Matti Toivonen was the host of the series throughout its run and was only briefly replaced by Leea Ollikainen due Toivonen's snowboarding accident. Toivonen also hosted the earlier, a similarly themed television series "Suuret Setelit" (Big bucks) which ran on MTV3 channel from 1997 to 1999, produced by the Finnish company "Production House".
