Lynda Day George guest stars as Dora Burnham, a Southern belle with a weak heart, kidnapped en route to see her doctor, by Clifford Tait (Warren Vanders), a former Confederate officer who demands that she write a ransom note to her wealthy father. In stubbornly refusing, she is imprisoned in a wide pit with Caine, shocked that the kidnappers were aided by her black maid, Jenny (Judy Pace), who resents being treated as a servant all her life, prompting Caine to flash back to how Master Kan (Philip Ahn) taught him that there need not be shame in serving and being served. Dora learns this lesson by helping Caine survive a fever brought on by his gunshot wound. The desperate Tait winds up brandishing a sword against the unarmed Caine, wielding only a large stick in self defense. David Carradine had, by this time, become so enmeshed in his role that he proved to be even more convincing in his fight scenes, and this episode features one of the best. Warren Vanders had previously appeared in episode 11 "Chains." Judy Pace was a busy presence on television, revered as one of the most beautiful actresses of her time (I do recall her playing a supermodel in 1972's "Frogs").
