I really liked this film. It was shot in lovely locations in the French countryside, on the beach-front and in little town cafés, and it featured a host of beautiful actors and actresses (many of them non-professional). Yes there is a lot of explicit (non-simulated) sex and nudity throughout but for a film which is about exploring the central role of sexuality in our modern lives it makes sense and I didn't find it either offensive or pornographic. Though very sexually explicit the scenes were tasteful and beautifully shot. It was also quite a funny film. You could definitely watch this with your girlfriend or boyfriend.

I wish all countries could treat sexuality in a matter-of-fact way like this as the French do.

Director Laurent Bouhnik had an interesting idea, but it didn't translate well on screen. I consider almost every aspect of this film a very rough draft.

1. Character development is almost non-existent. 2. The narrative is choppy and many scenes are unnecessary. 3. The plot lacks direction. 4. The acting is okay at best. 5. None of the characters are particularly likable.

Bottom Line: I've read several reviews that praise this film for it's success in it's depiction of eroticism, however, Bouhnik's overly-heavy focus on sex and erotic behavior doesn't leave enough room for the characters or the story to develop properly. I will admit that there are several (individual) scenes that are strong--diamonds in the rough, if you will--but when the film was over, I had taken nothing from it, felt nothing during it, and was generally uninterested in the story and the characters.

This movie is very daring because showing many unsimulated sex scenes, what is not frequent in mainstream movies. Some young actors are good and promising. The first one is Deborah Révy who plays the leading role. Even if her character is not very credible (a girl obsessed by sex and greedy to make love with many people, just because her father died recently), she plays it well, with a provocative and natural attitude. She's pretty convincing even if the storyboard is rather awkward.

Hélène Zimmer who plays, on the opposite, a shy girl frightened to make love with her boyfriend for the first time, is touching and very convincing too.

In that kind of movie showing explicitly physical love, I preferred "9 songs" by far, because in "Q", one has often the feeling that the explicit sex scenes are shown for themselves and don't really serve the story. so, watching the movie, one have an embarrassing feeling to be a voyeur.

that's pity, it could have been far better. But I enjoyed it anyway.

Cecile is a desirable girl. She knows it and uses herself as a weapon. Even though she has a boyfriend she flirts and leads on every man she runs into. Once she has their attention and their sex drive on full she goes away leaving them with her panties or her phone number. She has a group of girl friends that get very little attention. They hang around and worry about the future, their relationships and their unhappiness with men. Eventually they take on a new career.

Cecile's boyfriend is some little thug as are all his friends some of which are involved with Cecile friends. They commit crimes, talk about their sexual conquests, whine and cry about their girlfriends. Because of tough economical times they have no jobs.

Matt is perhaps the main male character here. He's a mechanic and at the beginning of the movie has a run in with Cecile, a frustrated one which is her specialty. He has a girlfriend, Alice, but she won't put out. When her mom catches the young couple walking around, Alice gets in big trouble. Apparently wherever this is taking place, the harbor town still has some Victorian small town morality.

An older couple is significant for these people's lives because, like everyone else here, they aren't getting any, but devise a plan to change that, a plan the will involve Cecile who in turn will involve Alice. It all ends on a happy note.

In Q you get to witness all these frustrated people-frustrated financially, frustrated sexually-going about being frustrated and having frustrated sexual encounters and quickly it frustrates you too. Cecile is an interesting character. She's a free spirit, sexually open, and very attractive. She too is mighty frustrated sexually and looks for thrills by using, abusing, and manipulating people. She and most other women in this movie tell men some very hurtful things, when men are at their most vulnerable. This movie ought to have been a more detailed exploration of that kind of woman who delights in arousing men for kicks. But this movie doesn't do that, it goes for the easy and nice solution. In meantime one has to put up with all the drama with these relationships among characters that are never clearly established. And I use "drama" in the worst sense possible, as used by young people today. People are constantly crying, when they are alone, when they are with their loved ones. It's a bit too much. All the men here are weaklings and whiners- an easy target for Cecile. We know next to nothing of the other males or Cecile's friends, but when one of them whines about sex or a partner, the camera is there.

Thankfully, this movie shows plenty of skin nicely filmed which keeps you entertained in between scenes that have you throwing up your arms in the air in frustration. There is some XXX activity going on, but I wouldn't even call them "scenes," they are just a few frames really. Nothing that should outrage anyone. Appropriately, there's a certain timelessness in this movie. We have no idea how much time transpires in part because some scenes in the future are interspersed throughout the movie and also because these people are stuck in some very old fashioned way of looking at things. Still, Q is watchable, it is not like some Brisseau movie that puts you to sleep even as women are taking their clothes off. Q does feature the best opening credits ever unfortunately filmed in black and blue coloring though. Not to mention that Deborah Revy and Helene Zimmer are very attractive in a normal sort of way without being fake bombshells. Q has a couple of good idea and some excellent talent, it could and should have been so much more.

Relationships as portrayed in this movie make you almost long for the new American transactional type of relationship among the sexes.

Wow, other reviewers see this as pornography. Take another look. It's about connection and disconnection in French society, in which sex and discussions about sex are used as a central vehicle for showing relations between men and women in French society (or at least younger ones). Note that the director never shows anything above the waist of the nude women in the shower chattering away about sex and men. Note that all the characters are missing each other needs and hence at odds and frustrated. Note the scene in the plaza where everyone is self-absorbed. Note that the author starts the movie with a message that he still believes love is possible.

Where the movie fails most is not in its failure to do more than vaguely allude to the background situation - unemployment and a shipyard strike. Why those are even there is never clarified. Rather, it was the director's inability to bring the story to completion without implanting an implausibly happy ending that left me wondering what was the point of it all. If French social relations are pretty much the same as they were 25 years ago, then the director's gotten quite a bit right. Unfortunately, he didn't know where to go with it. That's why, in spite of the good acting (for the most part), I gave it only six stars.

I love this film! It is honest and beautiful, and I actually liked how all the sexy scenes never stopped surprising you. Very sincere and I also love the storyline. There is nothing about this movie that feels fake, and yes, maybe it was not what I expected but it was... fascinating. It also contains some great acting.

More films out there should be this honest and real! And also, I like Cecile's and Chance's relationship, it is just so interesting... You can really see from the beginning how they care for each other, and yet they do not make any promises or expect anything from each other.

The shooting and conversations in the movie is what I feel makes it so honest. Absolutely wonderful.

I would totally watch it again. And again.

Its hard to make a drama erotic, the more complex if its the other way around. Q is an erotica at its dramatic best, a distant topper in the genre. The plot evolves with lives of some characters revolving around Cecile, the protagonist in the drama, and how she change their lives. Too much subtle the screenplay at times, that we tend to lose it quite easily. And thankfully, the erotic scenes never shadows the feel of the movie which makes it engaging throughout.

The creditable performances from the cast imprints the quality of the drama, and quite deceitfully we get obsessed with the protagonist played by the gorgeous Déborah Révy - a rare breed of voluptuousness and acting prowess. The movie for all its sensuousness should be indebted to some unseen good locale, complemented well by good cinematography. A must stop port this for the erotica lovers, and a good watch for other movie goers. Its an erotica at its dramatic best. 6.5/10

I give this film the courtesy of marking "Contains spoiler" box (yes, I've seen the uncut version). Here it goes: ass, breasts, vagina, penis, blow job, hand job, pussy eating, promiscuous sex, lesbian sex... Now, I probably spoiled everything and you don't want to see it anymore.

For a moment -just for a moment- I thought there was a plot, like "Women use sex to get other things from men, and men promise other things to get sex from women, but if men are broke and cannot attain those promises then women get unstable enough to run own brothel to raise cash, and then...", but my mind was probably playing tricks on me either in shock incurred from the awfully made car accident scene, or in befuddlement from having repeatedly seen so many jiggly wet asses and vaginae in showers backed by French nymphet chatters, or both.

To cut the long review short -and if you pardon my French- deux stars over dix.

It's a good film for couples who want to see a woman friendly soft porn and have sex afterwards, but it is a mediocre film for others. The story is basic, how love and sex has no superficial input in our lives, and also predictable. Cinematography, the shots are nicely done and nicely colored, but nowhere really special. So it never really wowed me. I found myself looking at the running time several times to see when the movie would end. The beautiful girl cast and their actions kept me watching. After a while i was just waiting for the next sex scene to happen. And those scenes follow quickly on each other. Basically the film is just a concatenation of soft porn sex scenes with minimal story line in between. It seems to have a lot of unsimulated fellatio and masturbation thrown right in your face, but once the real sex starts to happen the camera stays at distance.

Couples in love who would like to watch a woman friendly soft porn and want to have sex afterwards won't be disappointed. But for others, if the film wouldn't have the explicit sex content it would end up somewhere in the back of the shelves of the video store, fast and long forgotten.

But a very effective movie. I had no idea watching this, that it would have graphic nudity in it. Nor that it would also include actual penetration (oral sex and more). But that is not the reason I was positively surprised by this movie. The performances did it. And the fact, that the woman actually feel real in this one. They have their problems and desires and feel like well thought persons, which unfortunately even in "normal" movies is not always the case.

If you don't have a problem with the sexual and erotic nature of the movie, you will watch a drama that is very well made. Interestingly enough by a man, who obviously wanted to break with some conventions and clichés. But remember, this is more an drama that is erotic/sexual, than erotic with some added drama!

Yes, this avante-garde 2011 production certainly has multiple UNsimulated sex scenes (boy-girl and girl-girl), but this nicely-shot film offers MUCH more than that, and its story could NOT have been rendered properly without those scenes. Set in a small port on the English Channel coast -- probably around Normandy -- the story revolves around the misadventures of a half-dozen or so young middle-class early-twentysomethings who all seemingly lack motivation to do anything more with their lives than work in menial jobs (or steal cars, in a couple cases)...and have sex (the poor current economic situation in France is implicitly blamed for this, it seems). Brassy-slut-who's-really-just-looking-for-love-and-the-perfect-guy Cecile is the pivotal figure. It's quite interesting to see how she interacts with all the other key characters, and how her actions end-up actually helping a variety of people with their relationships. Turns out there's actually a HEART above that vagina...

This should be shown in high schools to teach girls why men cannot wait to get the hell out of the room as soon as the sex is over. The men in this film were obviously paid well to stay in the rooms. The women are by far the most vapid, tedious, self-absorbed, shallow and narrow as any in the history of civilization. Except perhaps the Kardashians. They all know how to tease and their only interest is sex. The little boys here foster that attitude by being even worse in some respects. There is absolutely not one sentence of engaging dialogue or a hint of any depth of perception. Nothing that is new or unique. The girls are attractive until they begin to speak, and then your arousal is crushed by the banality. Terrible film.

Talking to a family friend about my disappointing viewing of a 2012 Erotic Neo-Noir Thriller from Bollywood called Hate Story,I was surprised to hear from him, that he had in fact also just recently discovered a 2011 Erotic Drama from France called "Q".After originally thinking that he must have gotten another title for the film confused with Tim Blake Nelson's 2001 movie O,I began to look forward to hopefully seeing an Erotic film being done in the "correct way"

The plot:

Carrying round a box of her fathers ashes due to struggling to say goodbye to her dad,Ceclie tries to deal with the frustrations that she is by getting closer to her main friends Matt (a garage mechanic) and Alex (a car thief).

Finding both of them to have no feelings at all in trying to help and solve the problems,Ceclie begins to let her frustrations by playing on the sexual frustrations of Alex and Matt, which leads to Matt trying to quench the frustrations of desire that Ceclie has brought up,with his girlfriend Alice, who has not yet taken the "next step" with Matt, due to having deep frustrations of allowing her desire to be free.

View on the film:

Staying just about on the right side of Erotic instead of sleaze, each of the relatively new cast members give brave performances as each of them make the non-simulated sex scenes ones which are focused on the inner frustrations of the characters, rather then the exterior titillation.

Appearing in her first ever lead role, the beautiful Deborah Revy gives a strong, confident performance as Ceclie, with Revy making sure that Ceclie does not become a frustrating characters for the viewer by making sure that her attempts to winded other people up connects to the frustrations that Ceclie is trying to untangle.

Using the ongoing Great Recession as a backdrop for the film, the excellent screenplay by writer/director Laurent Bouhnik shows the relationships between Ceclie,Alex,Matt and Alice to be ones that are fractured due to all of them wanting to see growth in their relationships, but being unable to deal with the frustrations that each of them brings out in the other.

Along with the frustrations over their relationship,Bouhnik also brings a clever role reversal element into the film, with Cecilie being shown to be the most masculine character in the movie, from chatting with fellow patrons in a shell room about the qualities of a number of men "in bed",to knowing the exact buttons to press to increase Matt's frustrations, which leads to Bouhnik unleashing what initially appears to be a fracture ending, but slowly shows itself to be an untangling of the frustrations, and also loosely connected to the opening moments of the film.

Shooting in sharp, sharp tracking shots and long, stilted takes,Bouhnik takes the Erotic scenes in a direction which temporarily reveals the hidden causes the characters are frustrated by,which turns the meaning of the "Q" into being a "Q"uestion of desires.

Many people like erotic movies. Many people do not like hardcore movies, simply because hardcore movies are not artistic. I am one of these people, and I like this movie.

Another movie that is mimic to this one is another French movie called Baise Moi. However, Q is more artistic and better made than Baise Moi. Not only with better casting, but with better storyline.

The close up shooting in bathroom is impressive, it perfectly demonstrated the beauty of woman. I truly like the director's taste. Those scenes are beautiful and unforgettable.

The story is not complicated but the thought beyond that is very true: a man and a woman, when live together, must be compatible and matched each other both mentally and physically. If it doesn't happen, a true love would not be generated. And the two people will get in trouble if they still stay together.

I would give an 8 out of 10 for this movie.

Even though it is a French film, it's quite good. Beautiful scenery, quaint little French café's, beautiful countryside. HOWEVER, the movie takes a twist and turn and the explicit sex scenes are what we would see in a pornographic movie. They don't really add much to the context of the story but, for some, and especially the main character, will excite. I was mortified and shocked when I was given a ticket to preview a special screening, sitting their with my grandmother who lived in France for many years, I thought it would be nice for her to see France again. She saw a bit too much of France! I really don't know what to say about this film which has been branded 'Art', apart from : watch it, and make your own mind up. So ...um... yeah...

(Normally my comments are more in-depth and detailed but I'm at a loss for words with this one.)

I don't usually post IMDB reviews, but for this hot piece of garbage I had to to warn people to please, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. You'll waste 1h40 min of your life that you could spend doing anything. This erotic ''movie'' is nothing more but some soft core porn with terrible acting, terrible editing, terrible character development, terrible ''story'' and everyone involved in this production should be ashamed of themselves. They basically just wanted to cash in by putting some real sex scene, but at this point, just watch porn, you'll have a better time in every conceivable way.

Many will say it's porn but it's not. It's real, filmed, very explicit. And very intelligently edited. All exceptional actors.
