This is a film that doesn't hold back, and once you see it, you won't soon forget it. The Refugee is about the life story of Anar Usubov who lived through the Nagorno-Karabakh war between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He witnessed many atrocities while living on the run trying to stay alive.

It's hard to imagine being 8 years old during a war and not sure why there is fighting happening all around. One minute you're living peacefully, and the next you're moving from place to place trying to survive. This film gives first hand accounts of what it was like to live through this horrific period.

What is powerful about this documentary is that the filmmaker shows exactly what the effect was, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart. The images on screen are genuine and heartbreaking. Anar's family members and old acquaintances also share their experiences of the conflict.

They provide a different perspective, as they were old enough to comprehend the situation around them. They discuss how people were tortured and even some went missing. Hundreds of civilians were killed while trying to escape, and those who escaped and survived can't return to their homeland because Armenia still controls some of the territory. The survivors live with the pain of loss everyday, and all they have of their lost loved ones remain in old photographs.

This film documents the evil and desperation of human nature, but also touches on thoughts of hope.
