Jack knows that because of his irresponsible spending habits, he'll never have the kinds of things that Ralph, who is thrifty and sensible, will have. Jack resolves to change his spendthrift ways and cut down on extravagances like candy and movies in order to buy the things he wants.

Jack's friend has a camera and Jack would like one himself. So he adopts his friend's methods of budgeting his expenses and saves money each week towards this goal.

Coronet sold short films into the school market for three decades and this is as good as they get, which isn't saying much. They emphasized all the dull virtues and the best you can say about them is they didn't sugar coat them. Jack has to give up the things he likes, like peach sundaes, and make choices about going to a movie or going to a dance. He has to repair stuff instead of getting new things. It's not a terribly attractive way of doing things, but in the end, it does work.
