***SPOILERS*** It's when the attempt on the life of a waiter Ray Fredricks, Dan Barton, was made by someone impersonating a traffic cop that M Squad of the Chicago PD got into the act of fining who was behind all of this. With the hard as nails Let. Frank Ballinger, Lee Marvin, checking out all the leads he together with his boss Capt. Grey, Paul Newlan , realized that the poor slob Ray Fredricks happened to walk in on a deal, while on his job as a waiter, to fence thousands of dollars of stolen jewelry for the Chicago crime syndicate!

The syndicate has sent a hit-man from New York, who works from Murder Inc, to knock off Fredrick to keep him from possibly talking to the police about their fencing operation. The hit-man Vic Gordon played by Herschel "The Bird" Barnordi who screwed up the hit on Fredricks the first time around in determined to finish the job before the cops get wise to him and prevent him from doing it.

As it turned out the syndicate was using one of its molls the pretty redhead Dallas Martin, Mary Munday, to get legitimate jewel import exporter dealer Harry Van Horne, Wilton Groff, to do the work for the syndicate, or mob, without him knowing about it.It's when hard nose Let. Ballinger brought that fact out to Van Horne he folded like a cheap camera and spilled the beans on a shocked Dallas, who thought she had the old fool under her control, as well as her mobster friends. As for Vic Gordon he's to have a date , in a number of other murders that he committed in the state of Illinois, with the state electric chair or hot seat that both Let. Ballinger and the Justice Department are to make sure that he'll keep!
